So long summer…

Under a shady tree, with 80 bottles of bubbles, assorted boxes of chalk and home made snow cones, we celebrated the end of summer this past weekend. Thank you to friends, neighbors and those passing by who joined us for the morning. You made the event even more special.

Though we say so long to summer, the summer temps will linger on. There’s still time to fill up on cold treats like our home made snow cones. The syrups are simple to make and are free of any dyes, artificial flavors and preservatives. Plus, there are endless possibilities to these homemade syrups.

For our party, we kept it simple and traditional with strawberry and blueberry syrups. Here’s the basic recipe, but don’t limit yourself. Try combining your favorite flavors into artisanal creations.

Homemade Snow Cone Syrup

Makes approximately 1 3/4 cups

1 cup frozen or fresh fruit of choice (if using frozen fruit, let fruit thaw before using)

1/2 cup liquid sweetener (agave, maple syrup, simple syrup, honey)

1/4 cup water

Blend all ingredient in a blender or food processor. Set a sieve/fine mesh strainer over a medium bowl. Pour mixture into a fine mesh strainer and allow the liquid to drain through. This step is not necessary if you don’t mind a bit of pulp in your syrup.

The mixture is good in the fridge for up to 1 week.

I realize that a snow cone machine is not a common household appliance so to make your own shaved ice you can place the grater attachment to your food processor. Then add small chunks of ice into the feeder. Make sure that the ice pieces are about 1-2 inches so that the ice comes out in fine pieces. Lastly, top your icy cones with your flavored syrups and enjoy!
